First, a brief story about a simple recommendation that saved big bucks.  A North American steel mill used four packed 1200 psi discharge pressure centrifugal pumps that, on average, broke down every 9 months. The mill contacted an independent sealing distributor, who recommended a change in piping and the installation of a split mechanical seal.

Result: the average time between repairs increased from 9 months to over 3 years.  Repair costs dropped from $800,000 to $200,000.  The need for overtime and contract labor fell off the chart.
